Durham Biofuel Conference

REF's director, Dr John Constable, was an invited speaker at Durham University's "Biofuels, Science and Society Conference 2012", which was held on the 27-29th March 2012, at the Holgate Centre, Durham.

Dr Constable spoke on the use of biomass for the generation of electricity, showing that though the role of biomass since 2002 was little appreciated by the public, it was the major generator of energy under the Renewables Obligation, and government expectations, and commercial plans were ambitious and highly significant. Dr Constable emphasised the scale of the endeavour, with implications for the sustainable supply of fuel, and the teething problems, notably at Tilbury, but noted that biomass might be considerably cheaper from the consumer's perspective.
