Description

The IET – The system impacts of large wind fleets on the UK network.

http://www.theiet.org/local/uk/southwest/bristol/events/100208windfleets.cfm

Dr John Constable, of the Renewable Energy Foundation, will discuss the effects of large numbers of wind turbines on the national electricity grid, and the degree of “smoothing” of output likely from a geographically distributed wind fleet.

The presentation will use work conducted by the Renewable Energy Foundation and published in Energy Policy, as well as material from a major study just reaching completion on the effect of large wind fleets in Germany and Denmark on spot prices in those countries. The latter study shows that wind smoothing in that region is modest, and consequently the power flows from the German and Danish wind fleets are closely synchronised.

Dr Constable will discuss the implications for:

  • The need for Grid Expansion
  • The case for additional interconnection with the European system
  • The effects on investor behaviour in relation to the new build required to provide capacity equivalent to peak load
  • The cost to the consumer
